Sustainability
What does Sustainability mean to us?
To ‘sustain’ means to support. We are committed to supporting people (our employees, customers, the communities we operate in) and the planet.
We have identified 3 areas we want to focus our attention on, to help build a better future for everyone:
1. Strengthening our Communities
2. Protecting the Environment
3. Investing in People
What is ASM Acts?
ASM Acts is ASM Global’s worldwide sustainability initiative which Utilita Arena Newcastle is a part of. We examined our business through the lens of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and identified 3 areas where we can make a meaningful difference:
ASM Acts provides a framework to our venues by setting out our strategic aims and objectives. Each of our venues has developed their own bespoke action plan for 2025, which will be revised annually, based on the 3 pillars above. The venues’ goals are supported by our corporate team, including our HR team who are taking the lead on implementing diversity and inclusivity training across the group, and our Estates team who will be carrying out venue audits to identify where improvements can be made.
This new initiative is an extension of ASM Global’s longstanding commitment to creating a better workplace, a more diverse workforce, serving the communities where it operates, and contributing to a healthier environment and planet.
Steps we have made to be more sustainable in our venue
- In the past 12 months, 100% of our waste was recycled or recovered, saving 71 tons of carbon.
- Despite major renovations, we’ve set a new record—66.57% of all waste is recycled, with the rest recovered.
- Almost 50 tons of glass and 15 tons of cardboard were recycled, making a real impact.
- Waste is segregated on-site into 15 waste streams to ensure maximum recycling efficiency.
- Our new auditorium lighting is 76% more efficient, reducing power usage by over 50kW.
- Motion sensors in key areas help save even more energy by turning lights on only when needed.
- We also support local ecosystems with our bee hives, preserving nature in the heart of the city.
