The Quality of Life Quilt At Pins & Needles 3rd-5th April 2008
Inspired by the recent success of Andrew's Auction, a charity event that raised £10,000 for St Oswald's Hospice, the organisers of the North East's Largest Needlecraft and Paper Craft Event, have put their heads together with their exhibitors to come up with a unique fund raising event of their own.
In a dedicated workshop area at the heart of the Metroradio Arena, aptly named "Sew Central to Life" visitors will be joining hands and joining squares to produce the "Quality of Life Quilt". Each participant will produce a 10" square of patchwork from a varied selection of crafts and materials on offer in the workshops. They may then donate their work to create the Quality for Life Quilt and also earn a chance to win the quilt when it is raffled later this year to raise money for St Oswald's Hospice and The Great North Air Ambulance.
Responsible for bringing the quilt together will be Kim Suleman a regular exhibitor at Pins & Needles and owner of The Fat Quarters the number one, one stop shop for all patchwork and quilting needs. Kim said "This is a great opportunity for us to be involved in bringing together the crafters of the North East in one quilt.
The challenge won't end at Pins & Needles the quilt will be featured at The Fat Quarters first Quilt exhibition "Quilts at the Mill" at Blackhall Mill Community Centre, Blackhall Mill on the 12th & 13th July where the raffle will be drawn.
Those visitors who just want to look around and enjoy the show can simply buy a raffle ticket for their chance to win the quilt.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to knit using the World's Largest Knitting needles(Currently awaiting verification) The monster needles measuring 3.5m long and 8cm in diameter will be available on the stand of local textile artist Ingrid Wagner. Anybody willing to take up this over sized challenge can donate £1 and have a go; all monies raised will go to the same charities.
Bev Heron, community fundraiser from St Oswald's said:
"We are thrilled that St Oswald's has been chosen as one of the charities to benefit from the event. We believe in quality of life for everyone so the 'Quality of Life' quilt is a perfect way to help our charity. It's such a unique idea and we are very grateful for their support - their support is simply our lifeline."
